"Many of us spend a lot of time reading and listening to the news. Every Christian has a responsibility to know what is going on in the world around him. There’s nothing spiritual about being ignorant of current events. But, like anything else, news consumption must be done with a purpose in mind. When you read news stories, ask God what He wants you to do as a result of what you just learned. Some stories may stir compassion in you and make you want to send help to those in need. Other stories may help you determine the candidate in the next election that would best reflect your Christian values. Another thing many news stories can do is give you a reason to pray. Whether it’s the latest conflict in the Middle East, or a local family who lost their home to a fire, the newspaper can become your daily prayer bulletin. Remember, turning news time into prayer time will redeem the time. "
"A wise person said, “Though you cannot go back and make a brand-new start, you can start now and make a brand new end.” Most of us can look back at life and see some attempts at disciplined living, goal setting and redeeming the time that started well but ultimately fizzled out. For example, after experiencing heart problems most people are willing to try a regimen of healthy eating and proper exercise. But, a leading cardiologist estimates 85% of his patients will quit their regimen within six months. If you’re one of the many people who have failed in your physical, mental or spiritual disciplines, determine today that even though you have failed, with God’s grace as your source of strength, you don’t have to fail in the future. There’s a saying, “All’s well that ends well.” Getting your focus on ending well, even if you’ve had a rough start, will give you the new start you need to redeem the time. "
"A man got his wife a new cell phone for their anniversary. The next day she was shopping when her phone rang. “So how do you like your new phone dear?” he asked. “I like it” she said, “But there’s something I don’t understand. How did you know I was in the grocery store?” We don’t have to understand everything about cell phone technology to be able to use them. Cell phones can be a tremendous tool for making the most of our time. Long gone are the days when owning a cell phone was a status symbol. With prices dropping and technology improving there’s no reason you shouldn’t be using one. One very practical use is to call around to different stores when the store you are in has too high a price on an item or is sold out of it. Also, invest a moment to learn your particular phone’s features. Sometimes you’ll find they can save time, which means they help you redeem the time. "
"Can you believe anyone would actually name their daughter ""diet coke?"" A couple in Yorkshire England did. But the Coke's probably weren't doing it to be cute, since little ""Diet"" spelled DIOT was born in the year 1300. The naming of children in our day is something people often do without much thought or consideration of the name’s consequence. But what we name our children can have an effect on their attitudes later in life and can impact how well they learn to redeem the time. In Bible days, much care was given to the meaning of names. Often names were given to inspire devotion to the Lord, character and determination. Some of the names we've chosen for our children include, Sunshine, Summer, Joy, Joshua, Caleb and Christian. Remember, by choosing a name that inspires character, you can start even before they are born, teaching your children to attempt great things for God and to redeem the time. "
